Hi everyone,

In addition to being a guide, I am the Angler Engagement Coordinator for the Sportfish Center at the Harte Research Institute. I plan to periodically share fishery science content that I believe will help members improve their knowledge. Here's an example for those concerned about how fish will react to cold temperatures. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

This table shows the lethal water temperatures for selected bay species. Although water temperatures dropped from 70°F to 46°F since Sunday, the decrease was gradual compared to the rapid drop we experienced during the freeze in 2021. This gradual change allowed fish more time to acclimate to the changing conditions. While many species should be fine, subtropical species like snook and tarpon may perish, as they are not adapted to handle such low temperatures.

In the worst-case scenario, if air temperatures remain around or below 32°F for three consecutive days, it can lead to fish kills, with various species affected differently. Thankfully, this did not happen, and I hope it won’t for a long time.

*NOTE: These are only estimates. Factors such as fish size, water depth, bottom composition, rate of temperature change, duration of exposure, and many other variables can affect temperature-related mortality in fish species.

We filmed a setting up a kid to wade in the winter video this week. If you notice in it, he doesn’t have any sort of tackle bag. If your kid can tie knots fast like Jace, I repeat, DO NOT GIVE HIM A TACKLE BAG, he will be swapping lures more than Gardner. lol.

Pay attention to loons during the winter months they will give the fish away! They eat the same bait fish as trout and will help you lock in on smaller areas within a large flat. Here is a quick example...

About a month ago Compton and I pulled up to a large mud flat with scattered shell. I knew the fish were in the general location but it is a large area. We waded for about 20 min without a bite. I could see several looms diving down and coming back up about 150 yards away. I quickly picked him up and moved down. As soon as we got out in front of the loons we started catching fish.

Is there a new code for Fishing Tackle unlimited? Coldfront24 isn't working. Can I use the code in the store?

Started 2025 with a pretty decent day. Kenny and I took our Kayaks out to Sabine Pass for a 1/2 day trip. The tide was ripping out and probably dropped 18”-24” (mud lake was completely dry). We ended up with 9 trout the biggest was 22”’and weighed right at 4.5#. We caught 8 reds with the biggest one right at 29” and 9# on the Boga. All the fish were caught on K Wiggler Wig a Lo in The Truth and Bone Diamond. 1/4oz Jig heads fishing the scattered shell that is just south of mud lake.
