Really, any distance.  Just where it feels good to you, then adjust from there!

I sometimes rinse mine, but probably should everytime.  I have a shoe drier with extensions so I can put them on there, upside down and let it run for a good while.  Then off to the corner they go.

Mike, Jimi, and I went checking on the fall schools chasing shrimp to do some video work, and they are dang sure there, under birds! Video coming soon!
