Morning ,

I am fishing Calcasiue mid next week.

Any lure/color favorites for that lake besides live shrimp?

I have a ton of soft plastics. And a collection of crank baits to work with.

We will probably target specks and reds.

Thanks in advance

I spend a lot of time on the ICW.  Some barges displace just little bit of water, some displace a ton, and some throw a wake you could surf behind.  Does anyone know a way of telling them apart as they approach?  Thanks in Advance!!

Got to fish Deans area yesterday. For our first time I’d say it was a successful day. Lots of soild trout with a few going 4 pounds. Endless grass and potholes to fish. It’s a lot different than Matagorda but it’s similar fishing style. I will definitely get down here more often. Heavy fog pushed us off the water late in the evening. Definitely put what we learned from the podcast and AU into action and it paid off!!

Thanks AnglerU! Thanks Capt. Caleb, Capt Scott and Tattoo Mike. Good conversation while they signed me up for AnglerU and the Turtlebox drawing. This thing is a beast, love it!

Big thanks to AU for the Salty Hundo! Also thanks to Alex at Laguna helping me pick out a rod to pair it with. Love this set up already! Salty Hundo and Laguna Wader 1.

On Friday 03/07 I was fortunate to go on an instructional fishing trip with Captain "Sensei" McCumber.  While the conditions and fishing did not turn out they way we planned it was a great day on water.  I recently bought a boat after not owning one for about 20 years.  Needless to say after learning to drive the boat, figure out the trolling motor, read the GPS fish finder and trying to figure out where to catch fish my head has been spinning.  It got so bad I couldn't even cast may reel without blowing it up almost immediately.  Extremely frustrating!!  He fixed that in about 2 seconds.  Caleb is a natural instructor, knowledgeable, personable, and entertaining.  Not one time did I feel stupid or foolish for asking him any question at all and believe me I asked.  If I missed something he simply reminded me and it was greatly appreciated.  After his coaching I took my boat out Monday and was able to locate and catch several nice fish.   If you have the opportunity to go fishing with him I highly recommend it.

With AU technical issues reducing to a minimum, I’m FINALLY able to get back on the water! I’ll be offering 5-7 teaching trips a month and will be focusing on what I think is the topic the conditions allow for, the best. Got some of those Ray Ban Meta glasses to record on the fly for you guys that aren’t with me, and I’m pretty pumped at the quality they put out! If y’all are on the fence about getting some, they’re legit.

Fishing for freshwater redfish in San Antonio.

Living in San Antonio it’s not always convenient for me to hit our beloved bays every weekend. In San Antonio we have two freshwater power plant lakes that are stocked with redfish. Since they are power plant lakes the temperature stays fairly warm. In the past TPWD has experimented stocking these lakes with everything from speckled trout all the way to tarpon and Nile perch eventually settling on reds. TPWD stocks these redfish by the hundreds of thousands every year as fingerlings and they thrive. These fish cannot reproduce as that requires salt water so they are stocked for the sole purpose of recreation. The depth of these lakes is right around 50 feet with not much structure on the bottom other than depth changes. There are guides on this lake that produce fish by trolling around using down riggers and rattle traps. Others soak bait. You’re not going to sight cast these fish as the water is murky enough to lose sight of your trim tabs. I’m not one for trolling or using bait so I throw lures along the bulrush and cattails along the banks. Another thing that’s been working really well this year is spot locking or power poling on a point or lake hump where the depth drops off. I have been throwing Ned rigged and Texas rigged Z-man crawfish in 15-20 feet of water and very slowly bouncing the crawfish up the slope. I prefer Z-man brand as they float, with a Ned rig or Texas rig they will stand up on the bottom in a natural crawfish defensive position. It seems the reds travel in large schools. When one of these schools comes by it can be a fish every cast. These fish eat well and fat bulls are not uncommon.
